Nik Tkachev is the Head of Product for AI at JetBrains. He’s been building machine learning products for 10 years and specializes in navigating the gap between raw model capabilities and actual product UX. At JetBrains, an organization that’s spent 26 years building developer tooling, Nik is currently leading the product strategy for Air, their new agentic development environment designed to be agent‑agnostic and adaptable to rapidly changing tech ecosystems.
Last month at XT26, Nik gave a pragmatic breakdown of why engineering agents aren’t moving the needle on organizational productivity yet.
While individuals may feel faster, the aggregate data shows that some teams are actually slowing down. Nik traced this back to some concrete friction points across individuals, teams, and organizations.
To highlight a few:
- Context switching and design‑decision fatigue, because multiple‑step agent loops take time to execute, developers are running multiple parallel tasks to avoid watching the loading screen. Tracking this content across concurrent windows quickly drains cognitive energy.
- The velocity trap, because moving faster on features simply creates a bottleneck further down. Putting out more code without changing the review process just floods the team with unmanageable pull requests.
- Ecosystem isolation: We expect agents to automate workflows, but we isolate them from the environment. Human developers have elevated access to internal tools, which the agents lack, and that stores the true automation.
To bridge this gap, Nik doesn’t just diagnose the problem, he offers a roadmap out of the velocity trap. He outlines several strategies for unlocking true productivity, hinting at a necessary shift away from individual, prompt-based hacking and toward collaborative, shared systems.
